坐落在宾州费城的小镇Swarthmore，距离费城市中心11英里，开车约半小时。与其开车，不如来到校园边缘的火车站乘坐火车前往费城，约25分钟就可到达。从学校前往纽约和华盛顿特区都是大概两小时的车程。整个校园就是一片郁郁葱葱的植物园(Arboretum)，425英亩的校园里有大片草地，小溪流，树木茂盛的山坡和适合远足的幽径。

Swarthmore，昵称Swat，是由贵格教友派(the Society of Friends，又名Quakers)的一支Hicksite创立的。他们想建立一个教友派自己的教育机构，在这里学生可以获得和美国最好的大学相媲美的教育。最终学校定在了费城西南方向11英里的树木园里，这样学校里面的学生就可以同时享受令人心驰神往的优美环境和出类拔萃的学术与道德上的培养。1864年学校成立，所以2014年是Swarthmore建校150周年，学校也举办了很多庆典活动。

Swarthmore提供50个学术领域，给学生相当大的空间自由选择。2011最热门的专业依次为经济学(占18.0%)、生物学(占12.3%)、政治科学(占12.3%)、英语文学(占8.5%)和心理学(占6.6%)。而2018届申请者最热门的专业依次为工程、生物学、政治科学、经济学、英语文学、数学、物理、计算机科学和化学。

除了学校提供的专业之外，学生也可以把各领域的学科统一在一起，设计属于自己的与众不同的专业。例如Swarthmore有学生将心理学和经济学联系在一起，成为行为经济学，主要考察人们如何作出决定。
